Description

I so love a core spun yarn. They’re fluffy and airy, and look a bit exotic when knit up. This purple and yellow wool silk hand spun yarn ticks all the right boxes for me: there’s the cloud-like texture, the purple that you only notice has greens, yellows and blues on closer inspection, and the pop of yellow-orange silk as the second thread.

Core spun yarns are created by wrapping fibre horizontally against a core yarn, so that the latter becomes invisible and all you can see if the overlapping material. They’re unbalanced by nature, but when you ply them they go back to being tame and easy to knit, crochet or weave with.

I used a mohair/silk lace weight yarn as a core and pure silk for plying. All of this plus the soft merino wool makes for a really quality blend of fibres to work with.

Although this is a 2-ply construction yarn, it is a bulky to super bulky yarn (for me most part, my hand spun yarns have variations here and there) that would make a fun add-on to a woven tapestry or a textured beanie hat. There’s a total of 54 yards for you to use, perfect for a detail on a bigger project or a small hand knit or crochet item.

Hand spun yarns are special

Hand spun yarns are so unique and commercial yarns just can’t mimic their characteristics. Each skein has passed through the hands of the spinner and there will always be little whimsical inconsistencies (in a good way!) that make the yarn truly one of a kind.

I have lovingly spun each meter on my wheel, yet the journey doesn’t end with me –  it continues with you, your crafting project and your imagination.

Isn’t it amazing that you can be a part of the handmade journey of some woolly (and silky!) wonder?

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Keep yarn in a dry room away from direct sunlight. Airtight boxes are recommended. Don’t place anything heavy on top of the skein to avoid squishing it.
  • I recommend adding lavender sachets to the storage container for pest prevention.
  • Hand wash your finished product separately using wool-specific detergents, dry flat. Hand dyed fibres may bleed a little in the first couple of washes.
