Neon rainbow hand dyed sock blank | Fingering weight | 464 yrds | Pre-Order

Please note: this is a pre-order item. I do have a quick turnaround time (2-4 days plus shipping) so don’t let this stop you from ordering.

Hand dyed sock blanks are a super fun way to knit with fingering weight yarn:  simply pull the yarn on the right end and start your project.

With a single strand sock blank, you’ll only have one thread of yarn to knit with (best suited for shawls, or unmatched paired garments); whereas a double strand sock blank has two threads knitted together, so you can be sure your project will have a mirrored pair, such as two socks or mittens in the same colour progression.

As you knit or crochet with this neon sock blank, your colour progression will remain the same but the colours will pool differently depending on what your project is. Fun!

Tech info at a glance:

  • 100g and 464 yards/425 meters, the same as a regular skein of yarn
  • fingering weight, also referred to as 4-ply or sock weight (perfect not only for socks but for a myriad of other projects)
  • fibre: merino and nylon, 75/25 blend
  • Needle size 3.25mm-3.75mm (US 3-5), crochet hooks D-F

Description

This saturated neon hand dyed sock blank is a fun and different way to add bright rainbows to your knitting or crocheting life.

I hand dyed this sock blank in (mostly) UV-reactive, in-your-face neon colours and added speckles for extra pops of colour – this yarn is definitely for those who want to show off their love of neons!

Although this is a repeatable colourway, every yarn will come out slightly differently and no two will ever be exactly alike, so you can say you’re getting a one-of-a-kind hand dyed sock blank.

What is a sock blank?

Sock blanks are created by machine knitting yarn into a rectangle or circular tube, which can then be dyed in various ways, often stencilled.

You use them by unravelling the right end and knitting/crocheting your project straight away. If you prefer, you can unravel the whole thing, soak it in water in skein format and bring it back to its original, straight yarn shape.

Because what you are creating has a different shape than the sock blank, you’ll end up with a completely different colour pattern that can never be reproduced in any other project, ever. It’s a lot of fun seeing the colour progression emerge.

If you’ve never tried a hand dyed sock blank, you absolutely should. They’re a lot of fun, you see one thing unravelling and another coming to life! It’s very addictive.

What's the difference between Single Strand or Double Strand sock blanks?

A single stranded sock blank is machine knitted using only one thread of yarn. This means that, much like a regular skein of yarn, the colour progression of the sock blank is what you see dyed on it. This type of hand dyed sock blank is ideal for shawls or hats, items which aren’t mirrored.

By contrast, a double stranded sock blank is machine knitted with two threads of yarn together, meaning there are two threads side by side absorbing the dye more or less equally – this type of sock blank is perfect for knitting items in pairs, such as socks or mittens, because each item’s colour progression will be almost the same as the other (hand dyeing differences allowed).

What can I knit with a sock blank?

Anything your heart desires that would call for a skein of fingering/sock weight yarn! This yarn base’s merino and nylon blend (75/25) means it’s sturdy enough for socks, and you can also knit a shawl. There’s a total of 464 yards in this sock blank, but if you add one or more extra skeins to this one, you can even knit or crochet a cardigan or jumper/sweater – think “one base colour with added jewel tone rainbow stripes” and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Keep yarn in a dry room away from direct sunlight. Airtight boxes are recommended. Don’t place anything heavy on top of the skein to avoid squishing it.
  • I recommend adding lavender sachets to the storage container for pest prevention.
  • Hand wash your finished product separately using wool-specific detergents, dry flat. Hand dyed fibres may bleed a little in the first couple of washes.
