Description

My Fittonia colourway has finally made its debut to fibre! This previously, only-available-in-yarn purple, pink and aubergine/eggplant coloured wool for felting or spinning is a joy to behold, having been dyed in a lush Wensleydale wool top that is medium-to-long staple and a little shiny.

This wool top is non-superwash, meaning it will felt under the right conditions (friction and heat, or felting needles). It will also remain soft and lovely if handled properly and will spin up into a lovely yarn. Whatever your crafting plans, this fibre is here for the adventure.

There are 100g for you to enjoy and have fun with, so go ahead and make this Fittonia your creative muse!

Wool top or roving?

There is certainly a difference between combed wool top and roving. Both expressions are often used to represent the same item, but they pertain to two different types of fibre preparation. In fact, I am inserting this explanation here so I can use the expression “wool roving” correctly and still please the search algorithm gods. Sneaky.

Combed wool top such as this are processed in the mill to remove the short fibre staples, and all the longer remaining fibres have been combed to face the same direction.

Wool roving, on the other hand, still retains some shorter fibres and not all face the same direction, so it will have a fuzzier appearance.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Keep wool top/roving or art batts in a dry room away from direct sunlight. Airtight boxes are recommended. Don’t place anything heavy on top of the fibre to avoid squishing it.
Handle silk hankies with moisturised hands to avoid them sticking to your skin.
  • I recommend adding lavender sachets to the storage container for pest prevention.
  • Hand wash your finished product separately using wool-specific detergents, dry flat. Hand dyed fibres may bleed a little in the first couple of washes.
