Description

If you like an origin story, this art batt used to be a hand dyed braid of wool top! After looking at it, I decided it needed to be something more exciting and out came the drum carder and the extra fibres to make it textured. This is why it’s heavier than your usual 100g carded batt at 111g or 3.9 ounces.

This is one fun art batt for spinning or felting – it’s got hand dyed nepps (the little wool “balls” you can see scattered throughout the merino wool base), novelty thread that I’m pretty sure it’s silk but can’t swear, and some lovely sleek bamboo for added shine in a contrasting yellow.

My preferred way to spin art batts is to core spin them using a sticky yarn such as mohair as the core, and then ply it with some shiny thread. You can, however, do whatever you like with this fibre combo – art batts are a great way to experiment with texture and remember, sheep are growing more wool as we speak, so don’t be afraid to just experiment and see what happens!

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to wet felting so can’t really offer much advice, but I am told you can “disassemble” art batts by moving the fibres from one area to another to suit your purposes before felting, which sounds to me like a really fun way to play with wool.

Whatever you make with your art batt, this red, green, yellow and blue squishy marvel is here for some fibre fun.

Colour settings

Please be advised that the green on the photos is showing slightly more blueish than real life, however I have no way of knowing if your monitor settings are similar to mine.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Keep wool top/roving or art batts in a dry room away from direct sunlight. Airtight boxes are recommended. Don’t place anything heavy on top of the fibre to avoid squishing it.
Handle silk hankies with moisturised hands to avoid them sticking to your skin.
  • I recommend adding lavender sachets to the storage container for pest prevention.
  • Hand wash your finished product separately using wool-specific detergents, dry flat. Hand dyed fibres may bleed a little in the first couple of washes.
