Description

Although I love me a good, in-your-face rainbow, there’s nothing quite like the subtle pizzazz of a jewel tone rainbow yarn. You get all the goodness of a hand dyed yarn in multiple colours, but it’s more in tune with knitting and crocheting projects for the colder months of the year.

Nothing says Autumn quite like a jewel tone rainbow variegated skein, and this skein is no exception. Dyed in all the colours, you will see deep yellows, lush greens, moody purples and violets with deep reds and blues also invited to the party. Grab that hot drink, a cosy blanket, and get knitting something lovely like a beanie for yourself or a (knit-worthy) loved one.

I dyed this Sultry Rainbow in my Harmonia sock base, an absolutely gorgeous superwash merino and bio-nylon (75/25) heavy fingering weight, 2-ply construction yarn. It’s a softly plied yarn, which makes it gloriously squishy soft whilst still retaining all its sturdiness.

Sock or fingering weight yarn with nylon is perfect for harder wearing items such as socks, or warm beanies. The colour variegation in Sultry Rainbow keeps each row of your knitting or crocheting engaging.

Bio-nylon? What's that?

Glad you asked! (Well, I’m guessing you’d ask.) Allow me to tell you a little about nylon in broader terms first.

Nylon is a man-made fibre that’s added to certain yarns in order to make them sturdier to better withstand prolonged use. Think hand knit socks: you definitely want those to keep on warming your feet for many years, despite living inside shoes, right?
Nylon adds sturdiness to some of the softer, shorter stapled (that’s fibre length) fibres such as merino wool, making them last longer when used regularly.

However, the usual nylon you get is not as sustainable as wool. Like most artificial fibres, it’s not readily biodegradable.
In my pursuit of an eco-friendly alternative, I found the Amni Soul Eco ® nylon, which has many advantages over regular nylon:

  • it degrades 10x faster than regular nylon
  • the water used to process this fibre is recycled
  • it’s Oeko-Tex® certified (making it safe on the skin for both adults and children)

I’m in love with this soft, flow-y and plump yarn base, and I believe once you’ve tried it, you will be too!

About hand dyed colourways

Because designer indie-dyed yarns are created in small batches, differences are to be expected between them (and often even in the same batch). Because of this, I advise you buy as many skeins as needed for your project and alternate them to avoid pooling and colour mismatches. Find out more in our Fibre Bases and Info page.

Whether you’re talking about this jewel tone rainbow yarn or another colourway, I am also happy to custom dye lot of yarn to suit your needs, simply contact me on [email protected] and let’s talk!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Keep yarn in a dry room away from direct sunlight. Airtight boxes are recommended. Don’t place anything heavy on top of the skein to avoid squishing it.
  • I recommend adding lavender sachets to the storage container for pest prevention.
  • Hand wash your finished product separately using wool-specific detergents, dry flat. Hand dyed fibres may bleed a little in the first couple of washes.
